US Legal professional General Merrick Garland instructed Congress on Tuesday that he’s in favor of some of the proceeds from Russian oligarch seizures going straight to Ukraine.
Garland experienced been describing to the Senate Appropriations Committee how the US Justice Department specials with proceeds from Russian assets that have been recovered.
“The money would go into the asset forfeiture fund. So, initial point we have to do is freeze the property,” Garland advised the committee. “We would support legislation that would enable some of that income to go right to Ukraine.”
The Justice Department’s new undertaking force, called “Procedure KleptoCapture,” was established up in early March to assist detain the private jets, superyachts, and real estate of sanctioned Russian oligarchs.
Garland also explained to the committee that he expected there would be requests for legislative modifications to make it less difficult to seize sanctioned Russians’ property and taking dollars out of the asset forfeiture fund to deliver to Ukraine.
“I hope very shortly, within times probably, that the administration will be in a position to present some request,” Garland explained.
In early April, the US seized its 1st superyacht that had ties to Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg in Spain. The vessel is valued at $90 million, according to the US Division of Justice (DOJ).
Garland’s comments comply with President Joe Biden’s announcement on Thursday that the US would mail $800 million really worth of aid to Ukraine.
